K-12
To cater to the IT learning needs of school-children,
the company has set up an independent business unit, K-12,
focusing on the implementation of these projects within
specified quality and time norms. NIIT has already signed
up a dominant share of this business in the three Indian
States of Karnataka, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. West Bengal
has also entrusted NIIT with the task of introducing computer
education in 100 schools as a pilot. Through e-Gurucool,
NIIT is providing unique, well-researched education offerings—in
English, Maths and Sciences—that would help in the
performance of the children. NIIT's
bench marked training is available at 3800 Learning
centres across five continents including Africa, China,
Malaysia, Middle East, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Research & Development
NIIT has always laid great emphasis on Research and
Development (R&D) in order to come up with innovative
methods of training as well as developing systems and
software. NIIT's R&D Center is involved in basic
research, technology forecasting, technology support,
and product and process localization. The results of
NIIT's efforts are impacting software practices worldwide.
To stay at the cutting edge of technology
NIIT has set up Centers of Competence in Multimedia,
NetCentric Computing, Software R&D and Manufacturing
Solutions. R&D Scientists at NIIT are creating solutions
to deal with the new learning environment thrown open
by the Internet that addresses anytime, anywhere learning.
NIIT has made pioneering efforts in
the domain of Cognitive Engineering, carrying out in-depth
research and understanding of human cognition. NIIT
has set up a Center for Research in Cognitive Systems
(CRCS) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi.
This is a novel collaboration between industry and academia
aimed at breakthrough research in the area of Cognitive
Systems. A few recent technological breakthroughs of
R&D, for which NIIT has filed for patents:
• Cognitive Kiosk for Rural, Outdoor and Tropical
Environments
• Handy Audio Reach Kit (HARK)
• Web Appliance for Remote Presence (WARP)

The Technology Support
Group (TSG) filed a patent for Build My Application
(BMA) and Software Engineering Tools (SETS), the world’s
first, evolutionary full life-cycle software application
delivery over the net. SETS, when used concurrently
with system analysis and design, can help the analyst
have most of the application up and running by the end
of the design phase.
TSG has also created a unique process
automation suite of tools to track process data and
reviews, and provide visibility to end customers on
delivery processes, all over the net. This system has
the following components:
• Promon–A Project Monitoring package
• RRS-A Web-based Remote Review System
• NetCARE–A Web-based Customer Information
System
NIIT and Society
Whether it is helping financially challenged students
realize the dream of an IT career, taking illiterate
slum children through an exciting ride over the information
superhighway, or bringing the light of computer education
into the lives of the blind, NIIT is the force behind
these thoughtful, sensitive initiatives. These moves
have not only touched and transformed the lives of individuals,
they are also, in a quiet and revolutionary way, converting
India into an IT aware, IT savvy nation. In the present
day and age, when computerization and automation are
helping nations build a competitive edge, NIIT’s
strategic role in spreading the spirit of IT and making
it a countrywide phenomenon, are significant.
Take the instance of the World Computer
Literacy Day (WCLD) celebrated on December 2 every year,
has helped lakhs of people cross the digital divide.
For the first time in the history of the country a training
program actually cut across barriers of caste, creed,
economic and social disparity, mobilizing Indians across
the country to gain IT literacy.
The hugely popular Bhavishya Jyoti Annual
Scholarships, instituted thirteen years ago, have extended
world-class career education opportunities to meritorious
students and also to those who cannot afford it. |
